The Yawkey Baseball League wins the 8th Annual Eastern Massachusetts Baseball Classic!

The tournament pits All-Stars from the top four amateur leagues in New England: The Yawkey Baseball League, Park League, Cranberry League and Intercity League.  The YBL's 8-5 record is now the best winning percentage among the four leagues who participate in the tournament. The YBL ties the Intercity Baseball League for the most championships in the tournament with 3.  The YBL also ties the Cranberry Baseball League for the most wins in the tournament with 8.

The Stoneham Sabers were very well represented in the Classic.  Curtis Tirone, J.P Agiorgousis, Ryan Flanagan and Jon Chapman were all players selected to participate.  Angelo Colucci and Angelo Agiorgousis were also chosen to be part of the coaching staff led by McKay Club’s John Moore.  Curtis Tirone, Ryan Flanagan and J.P Agiorgousis were all part of the YBL’s starting lineup and had an instrumental part in coming from behind to defeat the Cranberry League 7-4 in game one.  Down by one run in the last inning of game 1, Agiorgousis’ drew a leadoff walk after battling through a ten pitch at bat, which ultimately lead to a 4 run surge.  In the finals, the Yawkey League defeated the Park League 5-4 to capture the crown.

Yet again, the Yawkey Baseball League is on top of the amateur baseball circuit in New England.

Jun 16 2019 9:44PM

Nick Powers throws a complete game shutout to win a pitcher's duel at Recreation Park.  Powers struck out 11 Townies, while scattering 4 hits to earn his first win of the season.  Brendan Pittsley earned the tough luck loss, as he was great all afternoon, striking out 6 Sabers.  The Sabers would score their only run in the 3rd. Barnes would lead off with a walk and then steal second base. Sharpe would hit a hard grounder to move Barnes to 3rd, who would later score on a passed ball.   In a day where mother nature did not cooperate, Rec Park continued to be the most reliable field in amateur baseball.

Sabers are now 6-6 on the year.  Next up, the Brighton Black Sox on Tuesday night at Brandeis University.
